Not only Fred but many of the others came to NYC to run these workshops as well as staff development workshops on various topics. Yes, what you recall was definitely bureau policy.
All this discussion about 2nd graders, looking at marginal papers, etc. reminds me of a time about 12 years ago when I was the 2nd grader and found a logic proof that had been given 1 (out of 10). It was an offbeat proof but perfectly correct. I gave it a 10 (and I was always known as a hard marker) but consulted with some colleagues in the room anyway. The kid's score went from 63 or 64 to 72 or 73.
Somewhere in these postings I recently read that the reason for not allowing the 2nd or 3rd look is that teachers were suspected of cheating because there were statistically too many papers graded with 65. Well, I say that it is certainly possible that here and there a paper might have been too generously scored. However, that is no reason to prevent students from receiving the grade they deserve.
It is impossible not to make mistakes when grading so many papers under the pressure of time. An earlier post this morning mentioned grading until 11:30 p.m. (I hope you were getting paid.) It is necessary that we pick each other up by finding these inadvertent errors.
I am retired now, but I think I would still be what others called hard but I called fair. With only 34% of the material correct (and some possibly due to fortuitous guessing), as people have reported, needed to pass Int Alg, I might continue to be a hard (fair) grader.

We must give every student every benefit of every doubt as we're scoring, as there will be no more rescoring of the 60-64 papers. I usually erred on the side of the conservative thinking that I could always give him or her the point later, if necessary. Now that philosophy will have to change. > > Steve Goldman > Half Hollow Hills HS East > Dix Hills, NY > > > > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG - www.avg.com > Version: 8.5.449 / Virus Database: 271.1.1/3649 - Release Date: 05/20/11 06:34:00
