Dear 1tree: I've shot 22 cal. rifle bullets into a heavy log hanging from a cord. Mostly the log rotates when hit. If I hit it on the harmonic of a slight backward (away from me) swing, it will swing that way higher. Nothing about this constitutes a measure of the KE of the bullet. As I've explained often, the KE of a bullet isn't measured by the impact effect, but by the RECOIL in launching the bullet on its way. Since part of that recoil is from the escape of hot gasses only partially utilized for propelling the bullet, the effective KE will usually be less than the measured recoil. ? NE ?
