The usual policy of NYSED is that if there is an error on the paper, the student cannot receive full credit. The answer to -3^2 is -9. The answer to (-3)^2 is 9. There is obviously an error.

If a student did not put parentheses around the negative 3 but squared it correctly and found the correct answer, does the student: 1) lose a point because there were no ( ) OR 2) get full credit because he/she squared it correctly?
