On the contrary, unlike the track record of abject failure that has afflicted mathematics education since the SMSG new math, direct instruction of the traditional college preparatory mathematics curriculum was hugely successful--as demonstrated by the enormous glut of mathematics, science, and engineering majors when I graduated from college in 1970. This glut coincided with the huge layoffs caused by the cutbacks in the space program, with very grim consequences for those of us who were looking for a job.
