Seems like a bad philosophy to me. What is the educational objective
here? Why should the students believe the assumptions we ask them to make?
Perhaps I have an odd viewpoint since I teach mostly engineers when I
teach calculus, but for them a convincing correct-but-not-rigorous explanation
seems about right. For math and science majors I still don't think calculus
is the right place to give non-trivial proofs; I prefer to do this in
linear algebra or number theory where the assumptions or axioms are much
weaker. In any case we probably should discuss this on a case by case
basis. It might be useful to share some of the proofs that have been
successful in calculus courses.
