Franz's modern experimental approaches are needed as rigorous introductions. That is, accurately parsing ancient texts by modern math or modern astronomical methods shows that related ancient methods need to be identified.
For example in 2004 a formal academic paper showed that 26 lines of Egyptian mathematical Leather Roll unit fraction patterns fell within a modern partitioning method. But was the modern partitioning method a fair representation of the ancient scribe's thought?
In 2011, an update to the 2004 paper showed that more than one scaling factor and red auxiliary numbers were used to think through the ancient conversions of 1/8 and 1/16, going well beyond the 2004 modern partitioning suggestion.
