This is a bit tangential, but it was an interesting revelation to me to see what a truly outstanding teacher could accomplish with just a set of (I dare not say average!) students in a typical American High School.
My first son went to a public High School where the class sizes are about 80 per grade. They aren't big enough to mount a football team but they do have a concert band, and marching band, and occasionally a rock or jazz band, and an a capella choir. Two musicals are staged each year and the students form a pit orchestra. 75% of the students participate in the music program in one way or another, sometimes belonging to all the groups. The a capella choir was good enough last year to be a finalist (top 10) in a radio contest against 200 other competitors.
There was one teacher running all this without a formal assistant. He taught large numbers students how to play all and any of the various band instruments even though they had no prior experience. He is truly a real life "Mr. Holland". (He just recently retired.)
He has a degree from Juilliard.
