Paul, I have monitored and participated in teacher centric blogs on math and physics for the last few years. I am not entering this debate unprepared and I have to be honest with you. My analysis is unfortunately much more optimistic than reality. Yes, the actual level of skill and talent is much less than even what I imply here. Don't get me wrong, their hearts are in the right place, but this reality is entirely the result of teaching a subject requiring skill to too many students not interested in it. If math was like music, where students CHOOSE to attend, then the value of math education would increase enormously and be more like the world of music education, filled with teachers and students possessing both interest and skill.
I'm sorry Paul, it is true. Finland and that evil I uncovered can't be true and this be false. It is all part of the same truth! The good news is that it doesn't have to be this way.
Math is an art and they need to return it to its proper place. The MAA was absolutely wrong nearly a century ago when it sought to force mathematics on everyone.
