Again, what I meant by "symbolic algorithm" was one that operated without needing to translate to or from "pictures". One could argue that the pictures are symbols too - so what I mean is an algorithm that doesn't have as one of its steps translating to or from any sort of alternative representation of a more "pictorial" nature.
Imprecise? Sure. Reasonable? I think so.
