see, momentum is just a mathematical quantity; you don't hit the ball with your momentum, to "impart momentum over second base," although you could label the dial of the detector, with units of momentum in proportion.
nominally, what is transfered is kinetic energy, and that has been expereimentally valiated to apply at any velocity, or even to light, with its "speed" of waving; those are waves, going at the speed of light through "free space;" just don't steal any.
