Theorem 1.29 in Rudin is a direct consequence of Rudin's
*choice* to identify (x,0) and x -- a decision of which he
informed the reader just moments before in the note after
Theorem 1.26.

The use of that choice can be seen in the proof that
starts with a + bi = (a,0) + ...
