In looking over this the next morning, it occurs to me that
I should mention that back then (January 1988) I had no
credit cards, no retirement savings, and no other access
to funds if I ran out. On the other hand, I was living rather
cheaply, though, as I had a paid-off 1974 Dodge Dart, no
telephone (a retired couple in an upstairs apartment, who
I helped out a little by carrying out their trash and a
few other things, served as my "phone contact"), no stereo
or related stuff, and no TV.
