Oh, I see. Then one need not walk a long ideological road from religious (conservative Christian or Muslim or any other religious) conservatism to communism, since, as you put it, "they offered much the same social program and...they fought for much the same constituencies" where these same "social programs" are such as laws against "the moral decadence of the West" in the form of laws against sexual freedom and porn and homosexuals and so on, and these "same constituencies" being those who think that those who practice sexual freedom or use porn or who are homosexuals or so on are morally decadent and should be treated as such.
Remember all that talk by communists about "Western vice and decadence" and all that? They in part were talking about things of a sexual nature. Here below is some interesting information giving some examples how communism treats things of a sexual nature much the same as religious conservatism, how statistically speaking religious conservatives and atheists who are communists are essentially the same type of bunch with essentially the same hang-ups about things of a sexual nature:
