Check out the curriculum module on Justification of Extrema posted at AP Central to read a little bit about how concepts related to optimization (max/min) problems are assessed on the AP exam.

Related Rates appears on the AP exam, although it isn't as big of a topic as others.

Optimization rarely appears on the exam (haven't seen a FRQ yet). I teach and test both the same amount since I think Optimization helps them think in a way they aren't used to.
