I have no objection to using expressions of this type even in second and third grade; the Russian 2nd grade has it. I overwhelmingly object to it being called "algebra" however. Lots of that stuff all along the way is reasonable -indeed useful - as algebra readiness but don't call it algebra. My favorite, although I've never seen it in print, only spoken by highly respected 5th grade teacher (then serving her district as its math specialist) before a state mathematics committee, "We do calculus in 5th grade."
