Jesse is of course already explaining this much better than I can, anyway be reassured that the qualifier "extended" is pretty customary: here infinities are just the projective or the affine infinites (as the result of division by zero) and, maybe you haven't though of it, but floating-point arithmetic is an example of an extended system already (i.e. extended pseudo-reals, as they are in fact a subset of the rationals).
