Bob, I just was shown a free iPad app "Hands-On Equations Lite" (there is a non-free version too, of course). I am familiar with Hands-On Equations, a means to demonstrate the solving of various levels of linear equations using the metaphor of pawns to represent variables and a balance scale.

You will find it more familiar than Dragonbox, and I suspect you will like it.
