Some reals are distinguished by finite initial segments of their decimal representations, most are not.
Sqrt(2) cannot be distinguished from ALL other reals by any finite initial segment of its decimal representation, but it can be so distinguished by the decimal representation of its square.
And there are at least countably many other reals for which the same is true. --
