It's time to use our voices with written words. Each and every person who just read that and said....they must have visited Colorado lately (think of what's legal there) needs to write an actual individual letter (not a group letter...everyone writes their own...quantity speaks louder to SED) AND send an email to Candy Shyer cshyer@mail.nysed.gov (she's in charge of assessment) detailing the sheer and utter foolishness of this. Then send the exam schedule to the Living Environment and Earth Science teachers and global too and anyone else who might be giving their own exam a few weeks later (so, everyone since we all get judged on our Slos) and make sure they understand how this WILL impact them as well since they will ALSO be losing valuable class and study time and ask THEM to write an individual letter and send an email to Candy. And why stop there...send one to King (he sends us rah rah emails, let's send him one each) Then send the exam schedule to every parent whose email you have and gently point out when the June exams are going to be given and kindly let them know they can contact the state if they have concerns. Of course, they didn't care about the middle school teachers (they have to give the May exam in April every year) so they probably don't care about us.
They may not listen. Doesn't mean it should stop us from being very very loud and vocal. Liz

... and it's not pretty. The Common Core Regents exams in Algebra I, Geometry and ELA will be iven June 3-4, which is two weeks before the start of Regents week. The memo implies that this will be for the first year only, not every ear. Presumably CC Algebra II will be given early in June 2015.) This is not presented as a draft exam schedule: it's presented as the xam schedule. http://www.p12.nysed.gov/assessment/schedules/schedule-hs.html So, in case we didn't already know this, NY considers the testing rogram more important than, you know, actual teaching and learning. ot only does this cut two weeks of instructional time for math, but t will disrupt other courses on those exam days. ---------- The memo also states that the three "traditional" Regents Exams (Int lg, Geo, A2T) will also be given in June 2014 and that the phase-out imeline for those exams has not been determined. Did we know that? t's news to me. Are those exam only being given so that students who studied the non- C curriculum can take those exams? Or do districts have the option of elaying adoption of Common Core? In past curriculum transitions istricts have had the option to wait, but from everything else we've een on enageny (rhymes with progeny), I assume that waiting is not an ption this time. Does anyone know? ----------- Two smaller notes: The last 3 days of exams are just RCTs, plus Chem. That's new. The Int Alg, Geo and A2T Regents are all given on the same day, with eo and A2T both in the afternoon. Is that good? Will there be a ignificant number of students taking both?
