Descartes gave us the screw-up on Snell's law,
apparently copied by fignewton in his "theory of light;"
this is in RD's correspondence with Fermat,
the true author of the theory of numbers (or,
modular arithmetic) -- hint to the OP.
anyway, the real question is,
What is the canonical digital representation
for base-one accounting?
