It doesn't even help them much to go to college. Many, many teachers give grades based on little or no indication the student has learned anything at all. Even college grades are nearly meaningless.

That is a part of it, no doubt. But it does not explain or excuse the Education Mafia awarding high school diplomas to students who cannot construct a proper English sentence, spoken or written. In other words, students go to college on the false belief they have learned something in public school and can do well in college, and colleges admit students on the basis of bogus credentials.
Half of all freshmen need remediation? Plainly, something has gone terribly wrong, pace David Berliner.
