This article provides the gist that it is a mental process, but I admit that it is so rudimentary and elementary it would be difficult to use as the basis of discussing the process in the context of chess or math. The article gives the impression that some final ontology is the abstraction, but abstraction goes a lot deeper than that. It even encompasses strategy and instinct as well. I have never had any difficulty discussing abstraction with others before, but that has been in person I guess. Or, maybe I have simply discussed it and thought about it more and my extensions are throwing you off.
