They are the same thing. Maybe this is where you are lost in this conversation. You are thinking that unless you write the steps down, then there are no steps. When I solve that problem symbolically it is the exact same process you just described. I try different constructions, different angles, different points of view, different perspectives, all symbolically mind you, till.....BAMN! And the dots connect. I am sorry to reveal this to you buddy. You didn't experience anything different than any one of us does in any other approach to this problem. I get it, you are in love (with visualizations) and like most people in love, not thinking straight.:)
