I think you are missing my point. You can easily tell when science is bad science, even in the beginning.
If someone wanted to prove that monkey-sense is "important" to math ability then all they would have to do is take 100 randomly selected kids and enhance their monkey sense and show us 100 (or even 90) successes. And to your point, given that people have been trying this and every other thing like this for 5 decades, with no results, it appears not to be possible.
