IT depends on what is meant by 0.999... If a real number is meant, then 0.999... = 1, but if only some infinite sequence of finitely long decimals, like 0.9, 0.99, 0.999, ..., is meant, the sequence is not EQUAL to 1 though it DOES have a limit which is equal to 1. --
