As an Indian, I really wouldn't worry too much about the 'apology' that is possibly owed to India by Nature. It really doesn't matter at all (IMHO) - we all (i.e., humans at large) do have HUGE problems ahead of us that we are not moving towards resolving, even intellectually. For our common future, it is crucial that some progress is made.

I'd suggest that Nature (including Scientific American; now owned by Nature, I understand) and the whole 'Nature Group' of publications really owe their readers huge apologies for not adequately and effectively researching their articles in general, and specifically in the light of the developments that must come out of a wider understanding of 'systems science' as a whole. (The understanding of 'systems' - even amongst 'systems scientists' - is quite rudimentary. It is crucial for humanity at large to start understanding 'systems').

For instance, with an adequately wide understanding of systems science (on the part of our scientists to begin with) - in particular as this discipline impacts on societal systems - people at large may come to understand that the 'nation-state' is really a concept that is reaching its 'sell-by-and-get-rid-of-by date' (if it has not already passed that date in the previous century).

[The above is an important issue that Mr Crabtree has touched on in his post heading this thread. I too, like him, find it 'comic-bookish' and very childish indeed that both China and India suffer rather severely from the 'super-power syndrome': both these nations have, I believe, learned this kind of thinking from the poor examples set early on by Great Britain and then by the US of A. (No doubt the USSR that was had also played its part in teaching us this kind of 'regressive thinking'].

But it's not just the 'Nature Group' that owes its readers apologies! (At the same time, we should acknowledge that such magazines do satisfy some very fundamental needs in our societal systems. That they are not *adequately* satisfying such needs is obvious - the question is: how to ensure that such needs are adequately satisfied?)
