What surprises me is how far we've gotten, with so little mention of lambda calculus.
If we're going to talk about the mathematical basis for languages, especially those of the FP species, then lambda calculus is a starting point. Alonso Church etc.
All of which is to say, CSenabled algebra leading to a fork in the road for those wishing more digital / discrete content, would have a rich heritage, to say the least.
As long as we allow our digital math track to stay optional, yet a stepping stone towards fulfilling math requirements, I think we'll be in little danger of creating an impoverished niche.
