He isn't "sensitive" about it. He just thinks experiential learning is better. As if you could learn much of anything from experience if you didn't have a good foundation of 'book-larning'.
It's of a piece with his denigration of the precise use of language, which arises from being too lazy to effect it. He prefers to say "If it's too much work, I'll just put it down."
