I think it would be very cool if a giant asteroid collided with earth as long as it wipes out all life on the planet simultaneously. That would certainly bring an end to the current mahayuga - at least as far as earth is concerned and would probably make Lord Vshnu very busy as he figures out what to do with all of the souls that need to be reincarnated in short order.
People have the strange notion that we need to preserve life on this planet. That is extremely naive and in the end it is something that is far beyond our control and can be determined by the GAOTU.
