Same reason we say "The Sun." Article adjectives specify that we're talking about one particular instance of a noun. At least officially. Mostly I think it's about the rhythm of speech.
Mars is a name, not a type of object. When we get a lot of space travel and have to deal with all the other moons we'll have to start calling ours "Luna" as most SF writers do.
I used to get pissed off at the guy who did the marquee on our local theater, who thought every title began with "The." "The Forbidden Planet." "The Giant." If he's still there it probably says "The Godzilla."
