As far as I can tell you can't. It appears that no child (handle) is
created when grids are turned on. The grid.m function is editable,
but essentially amounts to set(gca,'xgrid','on') etc.

I hope I'm wrong about this, but that's the way it looks to me.

This kind of rigid programming ticks me off.
