Subject: fractals

Here is a nice exercise for kids that introduces fractals (and similarity)
Take a cauliflower, break it up into little flowerets--doesn't each little
piece look like a miniature whole cauliflower? That's what self-similarity
is about. What other objects have that property? (ferns? tree branches?)

Mathematics is recognizing patterns, classifying objects; it's not just
arithmetic.
Even kindergarten kids can appreciate fractals.
