IAS/PCMI APPLICATIONS DUE FOR SUMMER 2013

http://pcmi.ias.edu/program-sstp/2013

Reminder: apply by Thursday, January 31st, to attend the 2013
Summer Session of IAS/PCMI, the Park City Mathematics Institute
(PCMI) of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). This three-
week residential program takes place in Park City, Utah, from
June 30 - July 20, 2013.

Teachers receive full support and a stipend during the Summer
Session. In addition, 6 quarter-credits of 400-level
mathematics are available from the University of Washington.

PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week

"This challenge helped me go beyond the content in the textbook
by making me think in different ways about triangle sides,
square roots, and the Pythagorean theorem. I had to make
teacher (Ms. Winne) several questions, and I received a few
small hints that planted the seed of the tall tree that I
climbed to the answer. I have used the Pythagorean theorem in
the past, on sites like Alcumus, but have never used it in a
problem as complex as this one. It was fun and challenging at
the same time. My dad has been talking to me a lot about
proving the Pythagorean theorem. It is a very useful theorem

MATH MISTAKES

http://mathmistakes.org/

Every day since last summer, New York City high school math
teacher Michael Pershan has posted a photo of a math error made
by a student -- and invited other teachers to come analyze and
discuss the misunderstandings behind those mistakes.

Now taking place: math education conversation of the day

"Can you recommend iPad apps that are good for integer review
and practice? Can you point me to a place where I can find
reviews of applications for middle school?"

- Sherry, posted to the middle school (grades 5-8) discussion
group of the Association of Math Teachers of New York State
