No, you're getting sheets and columns mixed up.

a=xlsread('waterevaporation','sheet1'); % read all the data from sheet1

interval=a(:,1); % Extract interval

flux=a(:,2); % Extract flux

q=interval.*flux; % Calc flow, note .*

xlswrite('waterevaporation',q,'sheet1','c1') % export flow
