PoW taking place: math problem-solving moment of the week

"Check out this excerpt from Beatriz S. at Crooked Oak High
School. I really liked how visual it was, even though there
was a variable represented as well as constant values....
Here's one more visual for you, from Marissa N. at Mesa Union
Junior High. She used a table to organize her steps, and it
really helped me understand her process when she used such
descriptive labels for each column. Plus, it turned out that
writing on a whiteboard and photographing it was
pretty legible!"

The Forum's Director of Professional Development has written
a journal article about how the Math Forum's noticing and
wondering not only values each learner, it "also works to
engage all learners in finding their mathematical voice."

"Supporting Sense-Making and Perseverance," which appears in
the current issue of the CMC ComMuniCator, provides an overview
of what mathforum.org freely offers in the way of documents,
videos, and blogs that support Common Core State Standards
(CCSS) Mathematical Practice 1.

Later in that same issue appears "Ostrich Llama
Count -- Examining Solution Methods." This article consists of
an activity, alignments, directions, extensions, and activity
sheets that detail five ways to solve the PoW "Ostrich
Llama Count."

Teacher Associate Marie Hogan. Having experimented with student
groupings in her classrooms for decades, Marie recalls how one
particular duo of eighth grade Pre-Algebra students, paired by
ability level, overcame a contentious start to work together
and "reach new heights of problem-solving proficiency."

Apply now for the summer workshop "How to Run a Math Teachers'
Circle," offered by the American Institute of
Mathematics (AIM).

Math teachers' circles put middle school math teachers in
regular contact with mathematicians to work collaboratively on
mathematical problem solving in the context of rich problems.

The deadline for these professional development opportunities
is Monday, 1 April, 2013.

AIM has begun archiving online its newsletter, which regularly
features contributions from Joshua Zucker (aka "Doctor Schwa"
of the Math Forum's Ask Dr. Math service), James Tanton, and
