I vote we expand our definition of innumeracy to include such things as confusion about which way to turn a screw. The "righty tighty lefty loosey" mantra is just like one of those arithmetical mantras we sometimes use to reinforce a "math fact" of a more lexical nature. Mathematics is a left *and* right brained activity, not either/or. And in our culture, it's the graphical that's *way* underdeveloped (cite "reform" BDTs). Computers pave the way, but we're bottlenecking in calculators. Evidence: what comes out of the NCTM propaganda mill.
Acronyms used: NCTM = National Council of Teachers of Mathematics BDT = Big Dummy Textbook (aka "tree killer")
