See today's front page article Hartocollis regarding parents' negative reactions to "the new, flexible math." It focuses only on disgruntled parents, and suggests that there is little research on the impact of these programs and that the little existing research is sponsored by publishers. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot about this article. It is written by a woman who has talked quite a bit with Dr. Stotsky. If you want to respond, the e-mail address for letters to the editor is letters@nytimes.com. There's also an on-line forum for responding, and many of the postings to date decry using our kids as "guinea pigs" for untested and unproven programs. Don't know how much it helps, but this is a place where we can be heard. I have responded, pointing out that there is significant research on the positive impact of these programs and that the research is in refereed journals such as JRME.
