Hi M F D,

You get Step 2 from Step 1 by multiplying out and regrouping, as follows:

Multiply v by its two factors in the first group less v times (f/a) from the second group

then multiply (d/2) by its two factors in the first group plus (because of double negative) (d/2) times (f/a) from the second group.

Regroup with v outside the first set of square brackets and (d/2) outside the second set of square brackets and you are there.
