EARCOME 3 -- Topic Study Group 5: Teacher Education

Aims and Focus

No one denies the crucial role that mathematics
teachers play in students' learning of
mathematics in school. While mathematics teachers
in East Asia may seem successful in their task as
shown by the exemplary performance of East Asian
students in international comparative studies,
there is one aspect of mathematics learning in
which mathematics teachers from this region may
not be
confident about. Creativity in mathematics is
relatively a new concept in East Asia that is
fast gaining ground.

Sub-themes

In accordance with the theme of the conference,
TSG 5 wishes to address several issues on Teacher
Education in East Asia. Papers to be presented
either by distribution or by oral presentation
should focus on the following themes:

Theme 1. Individual countries current practices
in the following with a view to integrating
creativity in mathematics

· Selection and recruitment of students into the
preservice mathematics teacher education programs
· Structure, contents, and delivery systems of
preservice mathematics teacher education programs
· Program and course unit distribution between
mathematics content courses and professional
courses (pedagogy, didactics, research methods,
etc.)
· Certification or licensing of mathematics teachers
· Programs and systems of in-service mathematics teacher education
· Promotion and retention of mathematics teachers

Theme 2. Research findings on:

· Effective approaches to teaching creative
thinking in mathematics to preservice and
inservice mathematics teachers at all levels
· How mathematics teachers develop techniques in
teaching creative mathematics thinking to their
students
· Underlying principles, philosophies and
foundations in developing competent and creative
mathematics teachers (preservice and inservice)
· Knowledge structure and field characteristics
of mathematics teacher professional development
· New theories in teacher education (e.g.,
situated cognition, case based reason, active
learning)

Theme 3. Challenges faced by East Asian
mathematics teacher educators in the education
and professional training of mathematics teachers
