General Algorithms for Integration

I recently saw in a book describing the workings of a symbolic math
software system reference to a general integral-finding algorithm in which
any integral which yields a result built out of elementary functions could
be found, and a proof of the non-integrability in terms of elementary functions
found in all other cases. Where can I find reference to such an algorithm?
