Variables wrongly assumed local

Does anyone know a simple solution to the following problem with Maple, which probably appears when using a package written for older versions of Maple with the new version V.3 :
Formerly, variables in a procedure not declared local were assumed to be global, but now they are under certain circumstances assumed local ( and a warning is given upon reading the package ).
I think this to be the reason that the standard_form package ( for simplifying systems of differential equations ) will not work with the Maple version I am using.
Is there a simple workaround for this problem ( a system switch or the like .. ) ? Sorry, if this is too simple a question, but I am quite new to Maple and didn't find anything in the online-help.
