I have seen this quote in two sources, but in both it appears out of
context:

"Algebra is generous: she often gives more than is asked for."
---d'Alembert

Could someone supply the reference?

The quote appears in Boyer's history (1991 ed., p. 439), and in
MacHale's book _Comic Sections_ (1993).
