We would like to invite you and your students to participate in the Virtual Math Teams ?Spring Math Fest?. The goal of this program is to engage students in open-ended and team-based math problem solving via the Internet. We ran a similar program last year with great participation from a few teams across the U.S. The students who participated enjoyed being in charge of their own investigations and generated some interesting mathematical explorations. This could be a great opportunity to end your school year with a motivating and rich mathematical activity.
Teams will be assembled with 3 to 5 students from different schools and we expect to have about 10 teams total. There will be four sessions that students will have to attend online: Tuesday May 9th, Thursday May 11, Tuesday, May 16th and Thursday May 18th. Sessions will be held at either 5pm to 6pm EDT or 7pm to 8pm EDT. We hope that these two time slots will make it easier for students in the East and West Coasts as well as in other parts of the world to participate. The math activity that teams will be working with is probably best done by students who know some algebra. So anyone who studied algebra this year or in previous years would enjoy it and even more advanced students will still be challenged by it.
This year we will award iPods to the members of the most collaborative Virtual Math Teams and offer a teacher subscription to the Math Forum's Problem of the Week service for those teachers whose students participate actively. The criteria for awarding the students prizes includes participating in all four sessions, actively engaging in the teams' collaborative problem-solving by discussing everyone's ideas, formulating interesting math questions and exploring them well as a team. We will also award certificates to all students who participate. Students will need to have access to an internet-connected computer with Java up to date to participate.
If you are interesting in participating, please respond to this e-mail with the names of up to 10 students that you nominate to participate, and your selection of the time slot when you know they will be available. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail.
