Applications of Integral Calculus

Having just confessed ignorance of the Dirac delta function, I thought I
may as well jump in with both feet (torso, arms, ....).

I am just starting to introduce integral calculus to my year 12s. I
would like to be able to give them an overview of situations where
integral calculus is actually used, outside of the usual
physics/engineering applications that dominate Australian texts. Now I
do have some maths texts that give 'applications', but being written by
mathematicians, I don't really know if these are real applications,
simplified versions of real applications, or just stories made up by the
authors to make it look as if there really are applications of this
stuff (like the ladder against the wall stories in introductory trig).

Ideally I would be able to present my students with a range of _real_
applications from economics, finance, biology, archeology, optics,
photography, business, medical research, the circus, flower arranging,
street sweeping, etc.

If you could contribute just one application, it would be much
appreciated. I imagine others on the list would be interested, so I
suggest that if you do respond, you do so publicly. I will summarise
the responses, and post the summary back to the list.

If you do respond, I will, on request, send you my _personal_
application of integral calculus, which I am not game to post publicly
to this list (nor use with my students).

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
