Problem 48 of the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus has been often discussed in regard to the ways in which it may provide a clue to how the Egyptians arrived at their (8/9 x diameter)sqrd rule for finding the area of a circle.
I have not as yet found any literature exploring other possible inferences that one can draw from the fact that this problem reveals an Egyptian interest in circumscribing a square about a circle (and so also, inscribing a circle inside a square). Might anyone be able to direct me to such discussions?
Many thanks.
