ALG 2 honors - why does my friend score higher?

Hi, im really not sure if this is the right way or the right place to ask this but its really been bugging me.
Me and my friend are juniors in high school, we both take the same math class - Algebra 2 honors.
the last test we took he scored a 24/25(96%). i scored a 16/25(64%). what i dont understand is how in the world he does it.
whenever i see him in class he is always asleep at his desk, and he NEVER does any of the homework.
me on the other hand, im awake in class paying attention + i do all of the homework as best i can. yet he still scores higher than me on tests.
i ask him how he does it, he tells me common sense. Its really worrying me because our teachers grading system works like this. 80% of our grade is based on tests/quiz's. and 20% homework/employability.
i dont if this is the right place to look for answers but, i dont know were else. i get good grades A/B's, i dont see why he scores so much higher than me on tests/quiz's.
