Is Geometry the first Inspirational Math class?

While looking for information on another subject I noticed the "geometryprecollege" forum and recalled that it was the first class to get cause me excitement about mathematics.
Do we still wait until the 9th or 10th grade until we show students a problem that can't be solved by a hand calculator?
The magic to high school geometry seems to be that it shows that creativity is a huge part of math, while even high school calculus seems to do the opposite.
Sorry if this is a bit off topic.
