Student/New Teacher Preparation

For those of you who have sponsored a student teacher or for new teachers:
What math topics, concepts or ideas do you wish your student teacher was more knowledgeable about before student teaching?
For new teachers, what math topics, concepts or ideas did you learn in your first year that you wished you had learned in your preparation to become a teacher?
I?m not asking about education strategies like classroom management but rather mathematical content. My student teachers frequently lament that the topics in the math courses in college are so far removed from what they teach that they feel underprepared in content. I?m compiling a description of topics that could be used to form a new pre-service course connecting college math to HS topics. If you teach a course like this for pre-service teachers, I?d be happy to get your feedback, too.
Email me directly and I?ll post the compilation when I?m done: HYPERLINK "mailto:mclemens@twcny.rr.com"mclemens@twcny.rr.com
