The alternative which you say your school is adopting (algebra 1, then algebra 2 integrated with geometry) was advocated years ago by Weeks and Adkins, authors of a 3-book series (algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2). They laid out their plan for integration of geometry and algebra 2 in a teacher's manual to accompany the algebra 2.
I believe that New York has now abandoned the integrated curriculums (the so-called sequential courses) and the math A-B. They are now going back to "integrated algebra," geometry, and algebra 2 w/ trigonometry.
