Dear Colleague, As explained in the letter sent to David Abrams, several professional organizations have protested the movement of the Geometry Regents exam from June 16th to June 9th, 2009. However, individuals are being urged to send their own objections to the move. I have enclosed NCMTA?s letter, which can be used as a template, but I encourage each of you to send your own to the State Education Department with a cc to Roger B. Tilles, our district?s Regent on the Board of Regents. His address is 100 Crossways Park West, Suite 107, Woodbury, NY 11797. Although NCMTA prefers that you send hard copies of your letter to the respective parties, the websites www.emsc.nysed.gov (for Mr. Abrams) and www.regents.nysed.gov (for Regent Tilles for LONG ISLAND) might provide an electronic means for contacting them. In these changing and challenging times for mathematics education, your voice needs to be heard. Please write, TODAY!
Mary Ann Mansfield
Dear Mr. Abrams, It has come to the attention of the executive board of the Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association that the date of the Geometry Regents Exam might possibly be moved from June 16, 2009 to June 9, 2009. We are overwhelmingly opposed to such a move because of the undue stress it would place on students, teachers and administrators. · Students would lose five days of instruction and preparation for a new Regents exam. · Students taking the exam would be forced to miss class time in other subjects that require their attention. · Teachers have already paced their instruction to accommodate an exam date of June 16. · Administration and grading of the exams during a time when school is in session will pose extreme difficulty in setting up an appropriate testing site and expedient delivery of the exams to SED. · Analysis of the exam?s results has already been contracted for completion before the last day of school, and it is that company?s obligation to meet the terms of the contract.
Both the Nassau County Principals Association and the New York State Association of Mathematics Supervisors have expressed similar concerns. To serve the best interests of all involved, we urge you to administer the Geometry Regents Exam as scheduled on June 16, 2009. Sincerely, Mary Ann Mansfield, President Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association Cc: Regent Roger B. Tilles, 100 Crossways Park West, Ste. 107, Woodbury, NY 11797.
